Harry Graham led a full life punctuated by a variety of great experiences–great in magnitude and effect. I believe it is his coming face to face with death and tragedy that allowed him to not take everyday life so seriously and joke about topics we normally hold hallowed, private, verboten. Worse and Worse is a collection of poems that showcases his willingness to push against the boundaries of comedy with black humor. They’re the kind of poems you laugh at, and then feel guilty for laughing at, because you realize they’ve touched a bigoted, primal side you’ve tried to deny existed. “Turkey,” read by yours truly, is one of multiple poems that each poke fun at a different country by highlighting its hypocrisies.
